Electromagnetic Transient and Design Studies

Power system transients, which are caused by events such as switching operations or lightning strikes, can lead to equipment damage, misoperations, or widespread performance issues. These disturbances range from high-frequency spikes that threaten sensitive electronics to lower-frequency oscillations that carry significant energy and propagate far from their source. Effects often include nuisance tripping of power-electronic devices and abnormal voltage or current deviations until system stability is restored.

KLS Power Consulting uses EMTP-RV and PSCAD to perform detailed electromagnetic transient studies that identify, evaluate, and mitigate these disturbances, supporting system reliability, protection coordination, and sound equipment design. Services include:

Our electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies focus on analyzing the fast-switching dynamics and high-speed interactions in electrical systems. We use PSCAD and EMTP RV tools to simulate and analyze:

  • Substation Insulation Coordination and Surge Protection Design
  • Coordination of Surge Arresters with Transformer BIL
  • Shielding Effectiveness and Lightning Performance of Substations
  • TOV (Temporary Overvoltage) Studies: Assessing voltage surges during transient events and designing mitigation strategies.
  • TRV (Transient Recovery Voltage) Studies: Analyzing voltage recovery following a fault to ensure equipment protection.
  • Switching Transients: Examining the impact of switching operations on system components.
  • Lightning Protection: Evaluating the effect of lightning strikes on system equipment and designing protection schemes.
  • Capacitor Bank Switching (Energizing and Switch Restrikes)
  • Outrush Reactor Transient Recovery Voltage Analysis

These studies help ensure that substation equipment is protected from fast transient events and that the system operates reliably during disturbances.
